Semesternavigator 2009/10 | Layout, Graphics, 2009
InDesign, Photoshop

On behalf of WebUni Deutschland e.V. I worked on the study guide ‘Semesternavigator 2009/10’ as part of a five-member team. That year it was published in an edition of 4500 copies and supported especially first-year students who weren’t familiar with university regulations and the financial aspects of study. For all new arrivals it also provided a comprehensive overview of Magdeburg. It scored over the older, more pedestrian study guides in two important respects: First, it was for free; and secondly it had the words DON’T PANIC inscribed in large friendly letters on its cover.

Our team was in charge of the whole production process: from conception, organization to realization. Following Douglas Adams’ The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy, we assigned a unique planet to every section. My task was to design the graphics and layout. The greatest challenge, to my mind, was naturally the accurate fit of the texts and images considering the compliance of 16-page printing sheets. In addition I obtained offers from print services and digitally prepared the document for pre-press.

It was revealing how much manpower is necessary for a project looking quite simple at first sight and how many authorities are taken into account during execution. I’m very glad to have helped a lot of students to survive and thrive in their new environment.

At this point I would like to thank Jessica Schöberlein, Anja Schildknecht, Hans Liedtke and Markus Lippmann for their great work.
