Under the label ‚Cities in Transition‘, the course Journalism/Media Management organizes study projects with partner universities throughout Europe. The results are audiovisual media productions which approach constantly-changing societies and living conditions in a creative and artistic manner. In 2011, I became part of a radio production project in cooperation with the Escola Superior de Communicacao Social in Lisbon.

In the run-up to the trip, we dealt extensively with the many facets of the country and the Portuguese media system. To demonstrate our practical skills, we were asked to produce a short audio demo. This is what a fellow student and I came up with. At this stage we also exchanged ideas and research sources with the Lisbon students. Finally, each group spent one week in the respective other country while being supported by the local students in terms of contacts, insider tips and orientation.

Our small team plunged into the Portuguese music culture between traditional urban fado and modern pop music. For this purpose we interviewed Antonio Gardoso, a record dealer, Catarina Limao, music journalist at RTP Antena 3, Ze Manel, a young upcoming pop musician, Pedro Ramos, owner of the renowned Faia restaurant and Linda Leonardo, a worldwide successful fado singer.
